Driver's Test

It's the most valuable thing you could ever have in your teens. It's almost like a pass to your freedom. Yes, it's your driving license.

It's really great to have your driving license. You wont need to think 50 times before deciding to go out somewhere. But to be given your license, you need to be good enough and careful enough in driving.

But what if you are being failed every time you do your test for no reason and no reason at all. Being failed for over 10 times before getting your license even though you would be qualified to pass since the first try.

Well, this is the case here in Muscat. This is the case with me!
Today I did my third test and as usual, I failed. Now I know that some of you people may think that you know how to drive although everybody else thinks different. But that's not the case with me. I know how to drive, my teachers say so, my parents say so and everybody else who ever rides in the car with me says so.

I've been unfairly failed for the third time. last time I failed, the police's excuse was that I was driving too slow, TOO SLOW!!. I know, how does that sound. and clearly that wasn't true for both me and my teacher. It just seemed like he didn't get any better excuse to give. And when I saw the paper which he write the result in, I saw marks in almost everything as if I didn't do anything right.

Lucky for me, the second time, I got the very same police man! I know, I am that unlucky. This time, I drove faster and did much much better and was very confident about the way I drove. He didn't say anything till we finished driving and I honestly thought that I passed to find out that I didn't. This time he didn't get anything to say at all so he just said that I am not concentrating. I don't know where but just not concentrating.

I got so pissed and angry. When I came back home, I decided to call the police station in charge of the driving tests.

We spoke Arabic so I made a video with the translation in English.

I know that they think I wont go down there to see what's up. Well, they thought wrong. Although I have school to attend, I wont let this slide. I will go down there some time this week and find out more about this problem.

Just so that we are clear, this problem didn't exist a while ago. People used to pass pretty easily few years back. But nowadays, it's almost impossible to pass from the first tests. Maybe 1 out of every 100 passes.

My opinion is that they found it a perfect source of easy money. 5RO for every test, you do 10 tests and that's 50RO. My friend got his license on his 14th test. Let's not forget the amount we pay for the teachers which is 5RO per hour and 10RO for making an appointment for the test.

I only did 3 tests till now and I already paid 100RO!!

Dude, they don't accept complaints via phone. You can place a complaint but it has to be done officially. Meaning that you have to go to the Traffic Services Department, get a form, fill it in and write down your complaint. I don't even think they will let you talk to an officer directly about this matter. You just write your complaint down and they will look after the matter.

Speaking of driving tests, I guess it depends on how lucky you are and how strict the police officer will examine you. Some police officers are very strict to the extent that they cannot overlook a tiny mistake such as parking the car without taking a signal. And some police officers are not that strict that they can overlook some small mistakes.

I do agree with you that sometimes they provide no valid reasons for failing the testers, especially at the first tries. But I guess they do fail teenagers at their first tries even if they were good drivers, just to give them more time to train and have more experience before getting the official license.

Some of those who have done more than 10 tries are really terrible drivers. I've been hearing a lot of stories from driving instructors about people they trained and in the tries they really drove terribly. Some of them become nervous and terrified when they drive with the police officer.

Wish you good luck in your 4th try! :)

Now I wouldn't know that if I didn't try it wouldn't I? :p

Thanx for the tip though. I know that some people are really bad but not all are.

They can't just waste our time if they are gona fail us anyways. Why dont they just take off a couplde of pages from the learner and say that we failed all those pages.

I have other commitments. Unlike them, I have a life.

Hopefully 4 is my lucky number. You didn't tell me what your experiance was???

al-mawali: I've done only one try and I definitely failed it. I'm not sure if the officer's reason was a valid reason or not, but at least I know for a fact that what he has written in my ketcha is something I DID. I mean the reason he failed me was that I entered the road in front of Qurum Park Gate with gear 2. He said I was supposed to enter with gear 1. Now yeah, I did enter with gear 2 but that was for a reason. I entered with gear 2 because when I came to enter the road the road was completely empty and I didn't have to stop, so I just continued entering the road with gear 2. The policeman told me that I fully stopped and still didn't shift to gear 1. I refused to argue with him and said to him ok, so be it, inshallah 5airha b'3airha. Then he was like yeah, biltawfeeq inshallah. He only ticked on one thing and wrote one reason in the ketcha. If he wrote down many different reasons and invalid ones like "he was not concentrating" or "he was out of control" and such reasons, I would have felt bad about it and did not accept it. But since his reason for failing me was something I DID, then I have no problems, even though I think that what I did was right and what he said (that I fully stopped) is not true.

I'm thinking of having my next try in Ramadhan inshallah, for some reason :-)

Ok, that sounds kinda fair. But he ticked things he didn't even mention me doing wrong just for the sake of ticking.

Maybe u wana do it in Ramadan in hopes for people to be much nicer. hehe... good strategy :p

I got it in the second attempt, not bad, I guess. My trainer was so angry that I got through in my second attempt that he asked me to cough up RO 50 for getting a license too early. The problem with the trainers is that they 'loot' wannabe drivers with RO5 per hour. Out of 60 minutes, 10 minutes is wasted for pick-up and drop, while another 5-10 minutes in front of coffeeshops. They feel very thirsty and hungry very often you see!

Nice to hear that you didn't suffer much. And it's true about all the time that is wasted suring training.

It's all just a big buisness for them and we are layed as victoms.

I was supposed to go to the police station to file a report but, funny enough, I don't have a car to get there.
