GHEDEX at OIEC

The Gulf Higher Education Show is being held at the moment at the Oman Internationa Exhibition Centre (OIEC). The 9th of its series, GHEDEX is the first exhibition in Oman to be awarded the accolade of an approved event of international stature by UFI (The Global Association for the Exhibition Industry).

This annual event is where all the major universities and colleges of the gulf come to exhibit their courses and offers for students to have a broad variety and choices in choosing their higher educations.

The event will last only three days and today is the second. I know I've announced this a little too late but you still have the chance to visit. To check for timings and making any other inquiries, call the OIEC on 968 24512100.

Not only universities from Gulf participate in this exhibition, but also universities from the UK, Australia and the US. So it's a great event for those who want to study abroad.

I didn't attend last year's Ghedix because I knew that I was going to study in the US, and sadly in Ghedex there are very very very few American universities which take part. Most of the universities which take part are from the UK and Australia. American universities tend to have their own exhibitions. Few weeks back I believe there was an exhibition for the American universities organized by the American embassy in Muscat. So that was also a good event for those whom are interested in studying in the US.

Good luck in hunting universities! :P It was a really VERY.. VERY... tiring process for me last year. Especially that for American universities, I have to apply myself directly. No centers to apply through, like Al-Wafaa Center for the British universities. I really spent a lot of time hunting American universities and colleges.. and that's the reason I missed a whole semester. But then again, I started a bit late.. that's why. The earlier, the better.

Yep, I went there today and it was universities from every where and not only the Gulf.
I will probably make a post on this next week with a couple of pictures of the place.

And dude, I feel you.. big time! I am so stressed out with colleges right now, I feel like I am just not going to attend any college in the end.
As you said, only one American university was there so, I didn't have the chance to look up American Universities.

I am thinking, something close like the UAE and plus, we have a house there at Sharja. I don't know...

What did you do to come to a decision? (Please don't mention missing a semester :P)

hahaha ..

well, for me it was a lot easier. because I had a major determined in mind, and I was looking for American universities.

Texas is the richest oil state in the US, so that's where I wanted to do my petroleum engineering degree. I limited my option to three universities in Texas. Applied to the three of them and picked the most appropriate one.

But, I was not 100% that I was going to get the student visa to the US since it's (or was) hard to get a student visa to the US. So I had other plans in mind. One of them Texas A&M in Qatar, and some options in UK (not petroleum engineering) and the American University in Sharjah.

Sadly, for most of the other options, their deadlines were already over. So I had a chance to apply only for a few of them. But when I got the acceptance from the American universities and got my US student visa within 4 ~ 5 weeks, I ditched them and went to the US :P

It's a tiring process because for each university required different documents. So I had to gather a lot of documents, send them via DHL to guarantee their arrival and wait for their reply... argghhh... it sucked. lol

wow, I don't think that helped me at all... :p

What I think helped you a lot is that you knew what you wanted exactly and the best way to pursue it.

I guess I am back to square one... When will this be over??!

In short, if you have a specific major in mind, that will make it a lot easier and will narrow your options down.

Choose a specific major. See what universities offer this major. Apply for them and choose the best offer you get.

That's the problem exactly. All the universities offer the major which I want. That's why I am so confused.

What are the best places for computer science?

Hello! I am a reader from the Philippines. Your blog is definitely one of the most interesting I have seen. I am happy to visit it.

Thank you very much. It is an honer to know that even poeple from the Philippines are following my Blog.

Is there anything that you would like me to talk about in spacific?

Amjad April 11, 2008 8:12 AM

heheheh.. I understand the case here. You can do Computer Science anywhere, and many good universities in different places offer Computer Science. But the question is, which one do you want? :D

Decide whether you want to stay in Oman, go to UAE, USA, UK, Canada, Australia or any other country.

Pick the known universities in that country and if you know anyone there it would be great. If I was in your place, I would have put in priority a university where I know someone.

Most important thing, don't apply only to one university. Always have different options and back-up plans. You never know what's going to happen.

Cool Amjad. I think that makes sense. I kinda have an idea now of where I might wanna go.

Thanks :)
