OmanMobile Thinks We Are Stupid
To begin this post, I want you'll to listen to this. It is an audio file of an OmanMobile advertisement which is aired all over the radio channels here in Oman.
Now is it me or does this sound really wrong? I know that this is supposed to show how cheap OmanMobile calls are but the whole Indian desperate house wives thing... I don't think so!
OK, so I am sure you'll might be swearing at me for wasting 30 seconds of your life in listening to this ad and probably asking yourselves why OmanMobile thinks we are stupid, right? Well, let's go back to the audio file for a second and listen one more time...
I want you'll to shift your focus on the Hayyak offer. Sounds good, doesn't it? 19.5 bz for every 30 seconds after the first minute, not too bad, or is it?
This is the Ad which you may find in practically every newspaper in Oman. I am sure you've seen it before even though you haven't payed much attention to it, right? So based on all of that publicity, you might think that they have something really big and genuine going on, wouldn't you?

I want you to have a closer look at the table on the bottom right of the page which has the offer on it. Look at this image closely, why doesn't it feel right?

I hope you like Maths because we are going to do some right now.
In the first column which is "OFF PEAK HOURS (BZ)", you pay 39 bz in your first minute and after your first minute, you ONLY pay 19.5 bz for every 30 seconds. And in the second column which is "PEAK HOURS (BZ)" you pay 55 bz for your first minute and ONLY pay 27.5 for every 3o seconds.
For you who may not know this, and obviously OmanMobile thinks we don't, you have 60 seconds in a minute. Why do I say this? Well, 19.5 + 19.5 = 39 and 27.5 + 27.5 = 55. Is there any more that needs to be said?
QUICK! Offer is only valid until 13th, May. "OmanMobile - connected with you"

I faced problems playing the audio file so I didn't listen to it, but I have a comment on your analysis of this offer from Oman Mobile.
I received an SMS from OmanMobile on my Oman phone about this offer, and thought that it's actually a great offer.
OmanMobile is not fooling anybody here.. lol. So they know that you know each minute has 60 seconds :P .. That's not the catch.
I will try explaining it briefly here, and then let you compare between the two following cases:
Lets say this offer is non-existent. And one minute in peak-times is for 55bz and in off-peak times is 39bz. If you talk on the phone with someone for 1 min and lets say 20 sec, you're going to pay 78bz in off-peak times, and 110bz in peak times.
Charged for two FULL minutes even though you talked only for 1 min and 20 sec.
Now, lets see the difference when we have this offer. If again you talk to somebody for 1 min and 20 sec, you're only going to pay 39bz + 19.5 = 58.5bz in off-peak times, and in peak times you will pay 55bz + 27.5bz = 82.5
Did you notice the difference? This illustrates what's this offer all about.
In the first case where this offer is non-existent, even if you talk for ONE second, you're charged for it as one whole minute. However, in the offer, when you talk for one minute and less than 30 seconds, for the additional 30 seconds you are not charged for one whole minute, but you're rather charged for half a minute. You're only charged for a whole minute if you exceed the 30 seconds.
Previously when this offer was non-existent, I used to talk to somebody for example for a min and 2 or 3 seconds, and I was charged two whole minutes for that call even though I had only 2 or 3 seconds in addition to one minute! So it was not fair. But with this offer, you pay half a minute for each 30 seconds after the first minute. Got it?
Plus, previously in Hayyak, the minute used to cost 45bz in off-peak times, now they reduced it to 39bz.
That's basically all what this offer about.
Of chance we have entered your blog and we have liked it
regard from Catalonia Spain
thank you
Amjad: Thanks for the great info.
Yes, that makes sense but it's not much of an offer if you think about it and especially if you listen to the audio file which suggests a long duration call.
When the equation is put the way you lay it out, it only seems that the offer affect your last minute which doesn't fit AT ALL with what they are advertising.
In the off-peak call without the offer, you pay 78bz after exceeding your first minute and with the offer is 58.5 so that mean 78 - 58.5 = 19.5 for your last minute only. and for the in peak time 110 - 82.5 = 27.5 bz for your last minute.
When I call somebody and talk to them for 10 minutes, I wouldn't really be bothered by loosing 27.5 bz , would you?
What I am saying is, don't trick the customers into thinking that this will actually cut down on there call costs and NOW they can make really long calls, because it doesn't. All I am asking is for you to look at their advertising techniques and compare it with the offer and you will see what I am talking about.
And therefor, Omantel still thinks we are Stupid! :p
Té la mà Maria - Reus: Thanks. It's always nice to hear from people from other countries and especially Spain.
Regards
loooooooool funny shit. keep it up
On my previous comment, I said Omantel when I should have said OmanMobile, sorry.
Anonymous: Thanks man, I will.
Nice one. Of course they are trying to trick people. And they will.
Great observation.
