Omantel: The fastest in the region
I am sure most of you had already heard all the buzz about the new ADSL packages that Omantel had introduced to the press yesterday. Everybody has been talking about it and many came up with theories about how it works and how much it may cost.
Lots of website and Blogs talked about this service like this one, this on, this one and even this one by the Times of Oman but none gave out real information about the service. None until I encountered this website which has published an article about this today that I think you should all visit to get real information. Click HERE to go directly to the article.
I know I could have taken information from the website and make it sound like I got the info all on my own but, man! These guys deserve all the credit.
I would also like to point put that Omantel's website is now featuring the new service as opposed to yesterday when people were asking about it. One thing though, if all this information is now being publicized, why is it when I called the Omantel's Internet service to ask about this service and the costs, the operator told me that all of the information will be revealed on the 1st of May? Wasn't he told?
One of the things Omantel promised to do is increase the current ADSL speeds from 384 Kpbs to the new speed of 512 Kpbs. And let me tell you guys, it has happened!
My previous download speed was about 45 - 50 kb/s and now, its at an amazing sped of 75 - 80 kb/s.
This is really exciting for me and for many, I presume. I never expected Oman to be the country that leads the Internet game but I guess I was wrong. Well, lets give this some time and see where it goes. Hopefully all goes well and we stay on the lead.
PS. To all you Nawras users who rubbed that 3G modems on my face... ahhum.

The site you linked to, Zawya.com, only reprinted the article from the Oman Observer, which in turn was only publishing the Omantel press release word for word like the other newspapers in Oman.
Someone from Omantel had told me the exact details of all the packages and pricing since Feb but I couldn't publish it bcz it would have gotten him in trouble, so I only wrote the broad details on Oman Forum. If you read that link on OF, I had put the exact packages including the upgrade to 512 and then packages at 1, 2, 4 and 8 without putting the prices except saying that 8Mbps would cost about 100 rials.
That's exactly how it turned out to be.
LOL.. I guess they don't deserve the credit after all. What happened to original content?
I see you are very well informed. Please keep us updated, Muscati. I am a big fan of your Blog and your character.
before you guys get too excited let me tell you what happened to me today..
i called Omantel 1300 to ask how i can upgrade .. they siad it was very simple:
i had to physically go to any of the omantel outlets to take a number wait in line and then fill out a form and get my normal adsl line upgraded to which ever package i wanted. so i asked if i could do it online and they said no you cant you have to go to the outlet.
so the evening comes and i call once again to ask what time does the outlet close coz i wanted to go and upgrade.. they said the shop closes at 8 pm i looked at my watch it was 715.. so i change... rush into the car speed thru the alkhuwair traffic, i get to zakher mall at 736... guess what .. the omanetel shop was closed !! there was small printout saying that we closed today at 7 and will be back tomorrow... i guess the store guys thought they would leave early and never bothered to tell anyone at the call center... now you can imagine the situation i am in ... this is typical omantel behavior so i let it pass..
i call 1300 again to tell them that the shop is closed.. the guy one the phone laughs at me and says of course its not closed its not 8 yet ... so i say i know its not but i am standing in front of the store and it is closed. he says oh you know we have this offer so they must have gone to celebrate...
celebrate !!! very good.. so i say ... excellent i need to upgrade this is why i came to store .. is there another one i can go to fill out the forms... he goes .. you know i wold tell you to go qurum , but that you say these this one is closed the other one might closed too..
inzain ya 7abibi how do i upgrade .. he go come back tomorrow (have you heard that one before?) so i say ok i will.. if i fill out the forms when will the new speeds work? he sounded a bit confused and said (here is shock) .... (wait for it) ... the service is not available yet .. it'll only be available on the 1st of May ... i said are you sure ???? i called before coming to shop to ask how to upgrade ... he said hold one and went to double check and came back and said .. its only available next month ...
so this is the new changed omantel tell with the fastest adsl connection in sht region..
at least my story is ok .. a friend of mine actually got to the store when it was open .. asked about the upgrade they told him to take a ticket with a number .. he did that .. and waited for an hour .. when he got to the customer service he told him that these packages are only available for new customers !!!!! so he said fine .. disconnect my existing adsl subscription and give me a new one.. the CSR got confused went to talk to his super and came back and said .. sorry this service is only available on the 1st of May come back then... ok cant i fill out the form now??? no no no come back after the 1st ...
so here you go ...
surprised ?
i dont think so...
disappointed
extremely ...
will these guys ever get it right ?
its all one big joke !
O my god!! LOOOOOOL! That is one hell of a story!
I wish I know who you are, I would love to meet you, hehe.
Ya, their service will always be crap, I guess but that doesn't change the fact that this is the first in the region.
Like with what I said, the guy didn't even know how much the service costs. I mean, come on!
What can you do?
dude ..
what difference does it make that its the first in the region if you cant get it ?????
its an imaginary service !!
I getcha point but at least you will be able to get it... someday.
Let's see how it goes. Keep us updated because I don't think I will be upgrading anytime soon. It's a bit over my budget.
I don't think it will even be available in May the 1st.
If you check their ads, they say that those new ADSL packages will be available in June 2008.
Amjad: Haha.. those employees really don't know a thing.
I don't know why the news was published by Omantel if the product is not going to be available for the next month or so?
