Origin Oman 150 Kilometer Meal
Origin Oman 's goal is to raise awareness on locally made goods. I've written about it in the past at this link. To learn more about it, visit their website at: originoman.om which I also have written about at this link.
The dinner was an invite-only and luckily, I got invited. The 150KM meal was held in the 26th and 27th of May at the tourism College at A'Seeb, near Golden Tulip Hotel, and the whole staff were students who are majored in that field. It was nice to see Omanis waitering for a change.
So, the 150KM meal is one of Origin Oman's many ways of promoting locally made goods. I've been hearing about this event for a while now and the dates have been changed a few times. The idea of this event is to have a dinner with ingredients sold in a radius of 150 kilometers around Muscat.
The menu was pretty interesting. You had to choose between two different menus that will serve as your starter, main course and dessert. Many of the guests and myself included went with the first menu which had Smoked Nizwani goat sausages for the main course. This isn't a traditional Omani meal by any means, it was the chef's creation and it was very good, most have enjoyed it.
The whole thing felt very classy and the people whom attended were mostly from the PEIE since they played a major role in it.The room was half full and it seemed like many had to cancel at the last moment since all the chairs were named.

nice style ,,,
Style? You mean the slide show?
Thank you :)
I went to the one held on Wednesday the 27th. I guess you were there the night before. It was a nice gathering of people, although the turnout was smaller than expected. Lots of seats remained empty.
I liked the idea, but I would have preferred if they didn't stick entirely with an Omani menu. I am more interested in cooking with Omani ingredients without being restricted to cooking Omani food. Of course Omani food can be cooked with ingredients grown and sourced in Oman. The bigger challenge is how to cook international cuisine with locally grown ingredients.
Another thing is that it seemed like there was no option for vegetarians.
Wow.. that;s a great idea, muscati. Cooking international cuisines using local ingredients, I didn't think of that. But maybe they just wanted to stick with the whole Omani theme and of course, Omani food is never vegetarian, right? :p
What upsets me the most is the turnout. People should take this more seriously. It is for good cause and we should be aware. I noticed that the only people who actually ARE aware about this are mostly the expats. What about the Omanis? Why couldn't they be an event like this in Arabic if they really DO care about the whole "cause".
In any case, at least the food was good.
It was such a fantastic idea. I was absolutley gutted that I couldn't attend. I wasn't invited!
I had been under the impression that the meals would be hosted at local hotels, and that members of the public would fork out RO 20 or so a night to sample the chef's creations at each hotel over the course of a few weeks.
I would have loved to see what the Itialian chef at the Hyatt, or the Chedi Chef could create using mostly locally sourced ingredients. I guess the logistics were just too daunting at the end.
I'm going to try and do my own Origin Oman Dinner for the family, just to see if I can pull it off. I'll let you know how it turns out.
