"Y" Magazine's slip-up

I originally read this story on one of the threads of KnowledgeOman.com and wanted to add my scoop on it.

"Y" Magazine has published an article in its Vol.1 Issue 21 Tuesday May 20 about the the launch of ITS's new website during COMEX 2008. The whole article talked about the process of the launch and what the website aims on doing.

So what's the problem?

Look at the image of the article below which was provided by Dr Alban from knowledgeOman and tell me for yourself.

If you read the whole article you will find that the it hasn't spoken about Tariq Al Barwani, president of KnowledgeOman, who his picture was added in the article. Shouldn't the Head and CEO of ITA's picture be there?

How can they make a mistake like this? I mean, it's not like they mis-wrote something, they added a picture which had nothing to do with the topic at all. I would like to know what you guys think on how a mistake like this could be made.

WOAH! I wonder what will KO or ITA do about this?

anonymous @ May 24, 2008 2:02 PM I am not sure. I don't think there is much that they can do.

ITA and Knowledge of Oman is one thing they both are IT and they both do and serving for community So I think this news is ok and no problem with it

Al-Maawali May 24, 2008 2:32 PM

khalid 3arabi That's not the case. Tariq has nothing to do with the ITA so why is he put in the article? It is a problem if you are a professional publication like "Y" Magazine.

Who's ITA CEO and what's his role in IT for Oman? I know the person in the picture and hear alot of his IT activities.

Is not knowledge oman and ITA one thing?

Amjad May 24, 2008 6:47 PM

anonymous: No. They are not one thing.

ITA is the Information Technology Authority in Oman, which is an Omani governmental institution. It has nothing to do with Knowledge Oman which is established by Tariq Al-Barwani and has nothing to do with the government.

al-maawali: I'm not really surprised about this. It happened a lot before in the Omani media, even from more professional newspapers like Al-Watan, Oman, Observer and Times of Oman. And it's really pathetic.

Amjad Really? They make all those mistakes? Even with people's pictures?
How do you suppose that happen? Do they just go through their gallery and take a pick? :p

Amjad that is ok and correct. But why Tariq picture and no one else then?

mody May 25, 2008 6:43 AM

Because Tariq is IT celebrity in Oman.

Hello Amjad this is the first time I hear that Oman has an Information Technology Authority. What do they do or have done in Oman already? How old is it and why are we not getting any news of their existence? Logically as khalid 3arabi said this knowledge oman should have been a project initiated by this body and not individual.

Politics is what I'm smelling from this news. Expect something to happen so soon.

Amjad May 25, 2008 9:41 PM

al-maawali: I haven't encountered a case which is exactly like this one - putting someone else's picture. But I have always seen cases where credits where given to people who had nothing to do with the projects, or credits where given incorrectly, which is somehow similar to this case, or even much worse than it, since the credits were not given to the original people at all.

I've seen mistakes with words and I could understand how that may happen but I am kinda surprised that a mix up with pictures could happen especially when the mistake is with a picture of a person who's picture is always put on newspapers.
