The Omani Who Hits The Indian
Here is another odd story that has happened to me. One night while chatting with my cousin over IM, he sent this video of an Omani guy hitting this Indian shop keeper. Watch the video below then I will continue with the rest of the story.
I was shocked when I watched this video and even though I knew that the shop keeper might have been scamming them and might have been wrong, the Omani guy had no right hitting him.
Anyway, my cousin sent this video at about 9pm and after that, a friend of mine called and we went out clubbing. After coming out of the club at about 2am, there was a guy standing there in a distance with some other guy. My friend told me, "we are gonna go shake hands with these two guys and I want you to have a good look at the big guy's face". I didn't know why but I did.
After we left those two guys, I asked my friend about it, so he pulled out his phone from his pocket and played a video on it. And guess what, it was the very same video that my cousin showed me earlier. And he pointed at the Omani guy who hit the shop keeper and said, "that was him".
I stood there and thought about the odds of that happening. Then I went on to explain to friend what had just happened.
Things like these keep on happening to me always or is it just that Oman is way too small?

Um Khalid: Thank you for the comment :)

man this gone to be in YOUTUBE
top10 list....
Great post Maawali. More! More!
I really hate the way we treat one another here, and I really hate the assigned pecking order. I've stepped in on one or two situations like this, and earned myself a black eye, and lots of gratitude from the guy being harassed. Some of the bar staff at the smaller hotels get it really bad. Shameful.
Um Khalid, Correct, sort of. It would be interesting to see what happened in the five minutes leading up to the confrontation. I still don't think it excuses the behavior of the Omani(s) in the video. They may have been portrayed unfairly on the Utube broadcast, but even a Child knows that hitting and calling names is unacceptable.
If I misunderstood you, sorry.
m33: I am not sure about that. There are pretty crazy stuff out there on youtube.
suburban: hehe.. I am glad you are enjoying my posts. Why aren't you posting nowadays? I miss them!
I usually try not to get involved in things like these. Because I tried many times before and ended up getting myself in the fight. So when I see something like this happening? I might ask the guy who is yelling and shouting about the problem and ask him politely if he can just let it go and if he doesn't, I just walk away. Some might call it being scared but I call it being smart.
From the looks of things in the video, the shopkeeper was wrong since the other "Indian" guy was yelling too but he shouldn't have yelled and called names as much as the Omani shouldn't have hit the guy. They should have just reported him and ended the problem. The scammer goes to jail and they maintain their dignity and get their cameras back.
Maawali,
I really want to thank you for this post .. while i agree that the behavior of these guys are completely unacceptable .. we have acknowledge the frustration that these guys are going thru ..
The level of bad service that we as consumer get here in Oman is unbearable .. although i dont agree with the way these guys handled the issue i can relate to their frustration ..
we should not encourage beating up shopkeepers, but we also should encourage bad service .. I agree with you that should have just reported it ..
I had a similar experience with a shopkeeper in ruwi .. He kept telling me to come back .. come back .. come back .. come back .. at the end i almost lost it .. and asked him to pay me for the time and petrol i spent going and coming .. he thought i was joking but i wasnt .. at the end he fixed my gadget and he paid me ..
I never went back there again .. but i think he learned his lesson too ... i REALLY cannot tolerate bad service ..
Omanymous: The pleasure is all mine.
I feel your pain. Great move you did there, it beats hitting the guy.
men, I really like the accent!!!
Plus this thing's may happen to everyone but,you have to be patient.......
Thanks for being caring almaawali. It shows your upbringing and I agree with you completely on how we should behave with our fellow human beings.
But on the other hand I recognised the shopkeeper from a very very bad experience I had with him and now I wish I behaved atleast half as bad these guys with him. Man he is terrible.I can really understand the frustration this chap made them go through. Trust me he is very capable of doing and I dont like saying it but he deserves it.

Thank you for the support.
But I will have to disagree with you on something. I understand that the shopkeeper may be wrong and I've even said that it seems like he is wrong but, in what right do we take the law into our own hands? Who gave us that right?
I agree that if he was wrong, he should be punished but isn't going to jail or being fined a big amount of money punishment enough?
If everybody starts doing what the Omani guy did and what the Indian guy who was yelling did, then the world would have been in chaos where everybody hits everybody and the law has no value.
You get what I am saying, right? :)
al-maawali, I agree with you. I can understand the frustration of having to deal with bad service, inefficiency and even cheating, but if we all start getting physical about these things, we lose the veneer that we call civilisation. Violence is often the resort of the inarticulate. The shopkeeper must presumably have had an Omani sponsor who is responsible for him. As a badly served customer, you should have recourse to appealing to higher management. I suspect the shopkeeper was not adequately trained to deal with customer complaints. How about looking into customer service training and what's happening in Oman. And yes, I think Muscat is that small that you could bump into the guy.
I think he is the camera repair shop near the old Fish Market in Ruwi . I can understand both customers frustration – I left my camera with that shop and came many times for it. The shop is closed, the guys not in, the repairs not done – short of being on the moon he was the least available shop in Ruwi. I gave up and my camera is still there – perhaps 10 years later! I guess its still not repaired cause he hasn’t phoned me.
